Years ago I was walking and driving the fields of one of the top three Japanese maple farms in the United States. As I looked around fields I was amazed at the perfection and beauty of each and every row and at the number of varieties of Japanese maples the farm carried. I asked the gentleman, originally from Colorado, I was working with what his favorite Japanese maple at their massive farm. The without hesitation the gentleman told me his favorite Japanese maple overall was the Baldsmith. He then spent the next five minutes telling me about its beauty, incredible colors, and how this tree is unlike any other maple in the world. I wrote down the name Baldsmith in my note pad and researched the tree for three years before finally deciding that is had to be added to Pacific Coast Maples Japanese maple tree collection. Baldsmith, like Pendulum Juliun, is truly unlike any other lace-leaved dissectum in the world today. Baldsmith, arguable displays more colors throughout the year than any other Japanese maple. Baldsmith bears a lighter colored orange-red spring foliage. The leaves become paler and green-tinged in the center with pink tinged margins as they develop. The combination of mature and new leaves throughout the summer gives a multicolored appearance of greens, pinks, and orange reds. In the fall, the leaves turn a bright yellow with orange hues. Baldsmith has the usual mounded habit and vigor of a dissectums but has a distinctive appearance because of the very pendulous, finely dissected light orange-red foliage. This maple is truly incredible for many reasons. A mature Baldsmith Japanese maple can reach heights from 6 to 10 feet.
