Acer Shirasawanum - 'Autumn Moon' is the newest edition to Pacific Coast Maples. This small tree has an attractive foliage that has an unusual burnt-orange color with an underlying shade of green. These colors really come out when exposed to direct sunlight until mid-day. Shaded leaves are also beautiful and carry a wide variety of pale to yellowish green tones. This Japanese maple's leaves have 11 short lobes, sometimes 9, which separate 2/3 the way out from the leaf base. Many of the trees leaves have a prominent rusty colored midrib that contrast beautifully with other firmly textured leaves. This beautiful tree withstands heat well. This chance seedling, 'Autumn Moon', originated at the Maplewood Nursery and was found by J.D. Vertrees, the aristocrat of Japanese maples.
