This highly sought after and somewhat rare dwarf shrub has bright red foliage which varies from brick red to light purple red. It is difficult to describe the color except that it is a pleasant color that is "showy". The older leaves carry darker tones, while the new foliage is more bright red during growth. Summer brings green into the center of the leaves with only a touch of red remaining on the margins. The very tiny leaves turn yellow, orange and red in the fall. 'Aratama' is one of the first trees to come out in spring. It is somewhat tender and susceptible to late frost damage. This shrub slowly reaches 3-4 ft. in 10 years. The name 'Aratama' means "uncut gem". 'Aratama' takes full sun very well. This is an incredible beautiful plant and is one of the most desirable shrubs for the small garden landscape.
