Pacific Coast Maples has hand selected young bonsai tree specimens that show great potential. The trees we’ve selected as bonsai specimens are typically 8”to 20” in height, have lower grafts, a strong, sturdy trunk, smaller than normal leaves, a beautiful or unique structure, and possibly a variety of leaf colors throughout the various seasons.
These set aside bonsai plants cost $10 more than other size #1’s and are placed on our ‘Bonsai Specimen Availability List’ by cultivar name when they become available. Our bonsai specimens are delivered to you in a 3/4 gallon or 1 gallon container. If needed the bottom 1/3 to 1/2 of the root structure can be sawed or pruned prior to planting in a bonsai pot. If you desire a bonsai specimen from a particular cultivar you may call or e-mail us to be placed on our waiting list. Please be patient as it takes time to find these special bonsai trees.
Bonsai is a well known and respected horticultural art form that began in China. Hundreds of years later the art form was taken to a new level in Japan. During the 14th century Bonsai became a highly refined art form as well as a part of the Japanese lifestyle. Bonsai were brought indoors for display at special times by the ‘Japanese elite’ which contributed to it becoming an important part of the Japanese culture. During the last fifty years bonsai, once centered on the continent of Asia, has quickly spread throughout the world from Greenland to the United States to South Africa to Australia.
Today Bonsai is no longer for the elite, and has become commonplace to the general public. Bonsai are ordinary trees or plants, not special hybrid dwarfs. The most popular bonsai trees are pine, azalea, bamboo and maples. Most Bonsai range in height from 1 to 3 feet. Bonsai are kept small and trained by pruning branches and roots, by periodic repotting, by pinching off new growth and by wiring branches so that they grow in a desired shape.
Bonsai, which once had strict standards, has become much more personalized with few rules to abide by. It does not have to be expensive and requires as much time, patience and skill as you want to put into it. Bonsai has quickly become a hobby for enjoyment. Pacific Coast Maples looks forward to providing you with your next bonsai tree.
